Day 5 - Edinburgh to Aberdeen
Another glorious day with full sunshine.
We hadnt used the car since arriving in Edinburgh. On the way up from Newcastle the windscreen washers had been gradually spraying less and less water as we were regularly clean the insects, mostly greenfly, off the screen. This morning it was showing that the washer tank was empty, which was strange as Paul had topped it up before leaving. He filled it with 3 bottles and 3 kettles of water and it still wouldnt work. He cleaned the screen with a cloth and said he thought it was an airlock and would look at it later.
We left Edinburgh at about 10am and decided to make for Arbroath, famous for Arbroath Smokies which are kippers. We went over the Forth and Tay road bridges and passed just south of Dundee. It was then very quiet roads all the way to Arbroath.
We first stopped at a retail park and Paul went into B&Q to buy a small piece of plastic tubing to try and clear what he thought was the airlock. This didnt work. He then bought a sink plunger to try and shift the airlock but that was too wide to seal over the windscreen washer reservoir. Now we are travelling around with a sink plunger in the boot of the car!
Arbroath town centre was a bit run down with a few deserted shops and many charity shops but there were some nice buildings as well. We tried to visit Arbroath Abbey was shut for lunch so we walked around and looked through the gates. We went to the harbour area and had our food and then walked along the harbour wall where there were some viewpoints. There are some sandy beaches and nice views up to Arbroath Cliffs, a bit further north.
When we got back to the car Paul tried the windscreen washers again and this time noticed water coming out from under the car. It looks like the washer reservoir or a pipe leading to it is damaged and leaking the water so will need more investigation involving jacking the car up and removing the wheel and wheel arch to get to it. So we are hoping that we can get by without them for the rest of our trip.
We arrived at our hotel in Aberdeen at about 4.30pm and have a small, but nice downstairs room. They told us they had folk music on tonight so we decided to stay in and eat here. The folk band seemed to be around 14 musicians playing celtic music in a corner of the pub. After eating we moved to one of the very few tables where they could be seen. We came to the conclusion that they met there to practice maybe once a week and were not paid performers. They were very good though and we enjoyed listening to them.
